We
got her into dry dock earlier this week. The fuel tank has been cleaned
and painted. The attached pictures show her out of the water with the
hull sanded, ready to start painting, the condition of the zinc anodes
on the propeller and drive shaft (they will need replacing), barnacle
stains on the propeller, and painting new length markings on the anchor
chain. We'll have more pictures as work progresses The pulpit has been repaired and is ready to re-install after the painting is complete. Also, the sails have been repaired. The sail loft tells us that we will need a new main before the next big adventure. Here is another picture of the anchor chain. It is painted and flaked down next to the other two anchor rodes. The plan at the dry dock is to start painting tommorow (Tuesday), first the hull, then theToday they started applying the primer coat to the hull. This is the progress before being interrupted by a morning rain shower. The plan was to finish the primer coat this afternoon when it dried off (if it dried off). I'm not sure if they will be applying 1 or 3 coats of primer. The recommendation is three coats of primer followed by a 12 hour cure, then 3 coats of paint followed by a 72 hour cure. The Final cure actually takes 21 days, but after 72 hours masking tape can be applied and the boot stripe, feature stripe, and bottom paint can then be applied. I don't think she'll be back in the water Friday. bottom. Friday she should be back in the water and Monday we should start on the top sides. ![]() Today they started applying the primer coat to the hull. I don't think she'll be back in the water Friday. ![]() Today I saw the first coat of bottom paint and four coats of Fleet White on the hull. We removed the propeller and started removing the rudder, which is going to take some work. The rudder shaft cap needs some convincing to break loose. The third picture is sanding the boot strip which will be painted red along with the feature stripe that has been masked off along the top of the hull but is not yet sanded. Notice the high gloss on the white paint. The red stripes will be painted in the morning (assuming the wind doesn't develop too early). Then the rudder and drive shaft should be removed. It is hoped that Wednesday we will replace the cutlass bearing, reinstall the drive shaft, replace the shaft packing, propeller and sacrificial zincs. Thursday the rudder should be replaced (with a shim on the stock to reduce vibration) and painted. Today we say the boot stripe and feature stripe painted on the hull. Tomorrow we will apply the name to the bow, remove the drive shaft and start those repairs. While the cutlass bearing and packing box are being overhauled we will take the propeller and drive shaft to be checked and polished. Hopefully we will not find any wear on the shaft at the bearing sites. Excess wear would mean a new shaft. A small amount could be polished smooth. The pictures are the current stage of painting and the rudder almost removed. The rudder post will need shimming, as mentioned before, but the wear is almost invisible to the eye. Today we applied the name to the bow (pictures attached)and the name and hailing port to the transom. We picked up the repaired bow pulpit. The drive shaft had, cutlass bearing, and packing box had been replaced when we arrived. The propeller and zincs were to be installed after we left and the rudder is supposed to be re-installed in the morning. If everything goes as planned she should be back in the water Saturday. In that case we can start on the top sides Monday. Monday painting finally got re-started and we have some new pictures. Tuesday the first coat of non-skid was applied to the deck, cabin top and Aft cabin top. Today the second coat went onto the deck and cabin top. At that point we ran out of gray paint and ordered more. Hatches still need non-skid and the same gray paint will be used on the inside (under side) of the dodger and on the dinghy bottom, but without the non-skid additive. By Saturday we may replace the aft cabin and start replacing deck hardware. Hopefully, Monday we will be back out of the water and working on a new drive shaft and checking the propeller. We will be planning a re-commissioning party when everything is back in place. That won't be on the ship's "birthday" of 4 Oct (reckoning from our first re-commissioning) but perhaps on the week end just before or after the princess's, 16 October.. |

| 10/2/06 | Today we set the aft cabin in place and bedded it down. After the
bedding is set up we will drill out the holes and install all of the
fasteners that hold it in place. Right now there are only enough to keep
it in alignment.
We also installed the main companionway doors, cabin ventilators, and some of the deck hardware. Rain is expected tomorrow so we plan to finish painting the dinghy, anchor windlass and hatches. This can be done in the shop. |
